Yes it is cold, but you have to wonder if many of our DADSvDADS games needed to be cancelled this week?, are the pitches really unplayable, of is cancel culture taking over again? this time at the venues.
That said, even professional sports, matches get postponed and abandoned for the strangest reasons, let’s have a look at some of the weirdest.
Middlesbrough Flu-Gate 24 hours before a vital game with Blackburn Rovers, a spate of flu swept through the Middlesbrough squad. Boro manager Bryan Robson couldn’t field a team and the premier league harshly fined them £50,000 and docked them 3 points. This would turn out a crucial 3 points as they were relegated by just two points at the end of the season!
The Battle of Bramhall A legendary fixture for all the wrong reasons. In 2002 a fixture between Sheffield United and West Brom had to be abandoned after the Blades had three players sent off and two injured. Warnock’s Sheffield United were fined £10,000 and lost the fixture 3-0.
Cornish Fog Weather can have a massive impact on sport, just look at the Rugby World Cup which had a spate of games cancelled because of a Typhoon. However, in England, it’s less common, unless it’s, of course, a waterlogged pitch. But in 2015 a match between St Austell and Bodmin Town had to be abandoned because thick fog meant players couldn’t see from one end of the pitch to other!
Torquay Sun In 1999, the unthinkable happened an English fixture was actually postponed because of the sun! Torquay United’s match with Plymouth Argyle had to be called off as thousands of visitors had come to the local area to watch the first total eclipse of the sun since 1922 and the police were worried they didn’t have the numbers to police the match and the rowdy sun watchers!
Drone- Yeovil Town The Southwest seems to have an unequal share of weird match stoppages. In January 2018 Yeovil Town’s league two match with Crawley Town was halted because of a drone invading the field, with both sides having to be taken off the pitch for their safety. The match was eventually allowed to continue but the drone was a bad omen for Yeovil with the Glovers conceding in the 8th minute of injury time!
Blackburn’s Chicken Why did the chicken cross the Premier League football pitch? In a vital relegation scrap between Backburn Rovers and Wigan in 2012 play was stopped when the Rovers fans decided to release a chicken onto the pitch to protest at the club’s owners. Unfortunately, the chicken didn’t do them any favours and Blackburn lost the match 1-0 and were relegated.
