It seemed to be happening less frequently and maybe we thought it had been brought under control but when boxings Conor Benn failed a drugs test for using performance-enhancing drugs recently it brought the subject back into the news, with some experts suggesting that drug cheating is as big an issue as ever, it’s just athletes are better at hiding it from the testers ?
So we thought we remind ourselves of some of the most notorious and outrages sporting drugs scandals from across sport.
Lance Armstrong Winner of 7 tour De France titles and the face of cycling globally, Armstrong had been accused of taking drugs to enhance performance since 1999. However, it took until 2013 for the cyclist to admit to cheating in an interview. He was stripped of all his titles and banned for life from the sport.
Chinese State doping The 1980s and 1990s saw global domination by Chinese athletes across lots of olympic sports. In the 1994 Aquatic championship China won 12 out of 16 gold medals and set a load of world records. However, it soon became obvious something fishy was going on when 50% of Chinese athletes between 1990 and 1998 were found to be doping!
Russia Doping scandal Between 2011 and 2015 over 1000 Russia athletes benefitted from doping, in what is the biggest cover up in sports history. In response, the IOC banned Russia from taking part in the 2018 Winter olympics with clean Russian athletes forced to compete under a neutral flag.
Ben Johnson Ben Johnson was a former Canadian sprinter who set two consecutive world records for the 100 metre sprint. He also won olympic gold medals in 1987 and 1988. However, not long after he was disqualified and stripped of his medal and titles when he was found to have used steriods.
