Teams often deploy the ‘club legend’ to make the fans happy and bring back a feel-good factor into the team. However, as Frank Lampard, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer even Christianio Ronaldo have shown, it’s never that straightforward and things can go downhill quickly. This week we are taking a look at club legends who couldn’t save their clubs.
Kenny Daglish- Liverpool
King Kenny is a bit of a controversial pick. His first reign at Liverpool led to three league titles and two FA Cups. But it was his second comeback in 2011 which all went wrong.
Daglish managed Liverpool to their worst Premier League finish since 1994 and perhaps even worse he bought Andy Carroll for £35 million!
Alan Shearer- Newcastle
Faced with the prospect of being relegated, Newcastle brought in their club legend and top goalscorer Shearer to help keep them up. He had 8 games to do it but his record of 5 loses, 1 win and 1 draw meant that Newcastle were back in the Championship for the first time since 1993.
Alan Pardew- Crystal Palace
A club legend for Palace in the 80’s and 90’s Pardew scored a winner against Liverpool in the 1990 Fa Cup semi-final. The 2015 season saw Palace 5th at Christmas and a confident Pardew assured the press that European qualification was in the bag. But a 14 match winless run followed by a poor next season meant that Pardew was soon shown the door.
Ossie Ardeles- Tottenhotspur
The Argentinian spurs legend was brought in to shake things up in North London. He brought drastic new formations and tactics including playing 5 up top and 1 in midfield. Unsurprisingly Spurs gave away 33 goals in just 15 games and Ardeles was looking for a new job.
Of course you’re legends in our DADS v DADS games, you just have to turn up to help keep it all going 😁. Get booked on for your game this week. Autumn DADS v DADS Fantasy League starts Sunday!
