This week we’re taking a look at the best sportsmen who were written off as finished, but managed to fight their way back (sometimes literally) to the top of their sports. They show that whatever age a sporting comeback is always possible. Although better to not don’t stop in the first place 🤣.
Tiger Woods, recently secured his 80th career win at the Tour Championship at East Lake, to complete his remarkable comeback. When we look at everything the golfer has been through, such as multiple surgeries, public humiliation, being arrested it is not hard to see why everyone thought he was finished in the sport. However, he has shocked everyone by fighting back to the top.
Tyson Fury. Another sportsman who has dealt with issues away from the sport. Drugs Hearings, depression and addiction threatened to end his career. Whatever your opinion of the controversial boxer he has made one of the sports greatest comebacks. The former world heavyweight champion of the world lost 150 pounds and narrowly lost to one of the divisions strongest boxers in Deontay Wilder.
Niki Lauda. One of the best drivers in the F1 was nearly killed on August 1st 1976 when his Ferrari was involved in a crash at the notorious Nurburgring. Suffering from horrific burns and smoke inhalation, Lauda somehow managed to return to racing just six weeks later and during his career, he won both the 1977 and 1984 world titles.
Muhammad Ali ‘The Greatest’ missed out on some of his best years after he was banned from boxing in 1967 when he refused to be drafted into the U.S Army during the Vietnam war. Aged 29 he was allowed to fight again and came back into the sport, going onto beat Joe Frazier and George Foreman in the ‘Rumble in the Jungle.’ Despite not being at his peak anymore, Ali was back at the top of the sport and cemented his legacy as the greatest of all time.
Thanks for reading this week. Hopefully, it’s offered a bit of inspiration, our own sporting comebacks are always possible. We don’t have to win any world titles or the heavyweight division to make a sporting comeback! And it’s impressive to see us improving again each week as us dinosaurs get more into it!
