So Scott Parker was the unfortunate winner of this year’s Premier League sack race, sacked after 4 games following a humiliating 9 – nil defeat against Liverpool. Apparently not because of results but because of his criticism of the club. Thomas Tuchel shortly followed, sacked after 6 games, with Chelsea after having only a 50% win rate 🤔. You’d think these would be the fastest sackings ever following the start of a season, but you’d be wrong, check these quick sackings from the past.
2017/18 – Frank De Boer (Crystal Palace) Frank De Boer holds the record for the worst start ever to a Premier League season. Crystal Palace lost all four opening games, and worse still failed to score a single goal in the process. Wonder when he was expecting his plan to kick in?
2019/20 – Javi Gracia (Watford) sacked in September 2019 also after four games. The Watford board is a tough crowd at the best of times and 1 point from 4 games and a reluctance to play record signing Osmaila Sarr was more than enough to bring on his demise.
2004/05 – Bobby Robson (Newcastle) 2004. Even the great Bobby was not protected from the early chopping block. He’d lead Newcastle to 5th in the league and the UEFA Cup semi-finals just the season before. But got the the sack after just 4 games, failing to win any of those games.
1993/94 – Peter Reid (Manchester City). Was alsosacked after just 4 games in August 1993. He managed to gather just 1 point for the club on those games and was dismissed late in August as part of a number of sweeping changes at the club.
And the winner is ! 1998/99 – Kenny Dalglish (Newcastle United) Newcastle again, and this time Fred Shepherd was not impressed with draws against Charlton and Chelsea so got rid of poor old Kenny after just 2 games !
No coaches in sight at our our DADS v DADS sessions, so unlikely to see any sackings. Maybe the organiser if he forgets to wash those bibs !
Enjoy your match night(s) this week 👍
